Sifiso Nkabinde's funeral in KwaZulu-Natal
Richmond, South Africa, sighed with cautious relief as the funeral of Sifiso Nkabinde passed without incident. Nkabinde, a political leader in the Midlands, was assassinated in 1999. His death was immediately followed by a revenge killing of a household of eleven, leading to fears that the area was heading towards more violence. Nkabinde was a former militant in the ruling ANC, but was expelled in1997 amid allegations he had been a government spy during South Africa's apartheid era. Within KwaZulu-Natal he was known as a warlord who could call up his supporters to attack members of rival political parties.
