Madonna of Excelsior

A performance of 'Madonna of Excelsior' is seen at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown on Friday June 28, 2013. Adapted for the stage by Kobus Moolman from the novel by Zakes Mda for the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State. Set in 1971, nineteen citizens of Excelsior in South Africa's white-ruled Free State were charged with breaking apartheid's Immorality Act, which forbade sex between blacks and whites. The play explores the emotions and the search of a daughter for her father, in order to discover her own true identity.
